Abstract

AbstractSmall lamellar air sensitive crystals of NaBaBi with a blue metallic lustre were obtained by direct reaction of the elements. The new polar intermetallic compound, which can formally be described as Na+Ba2+Bi3− crystallizes isotypic to Fe2P with lattice constants a = 859.1(1) pm, c = 509.1(1) pm (Z = 3, P $\bar 6$2m). NaBaBi is a small gap semiconductor similar to pnictides of the type A3B (A: alkali metal, B: Sb) and thus is a potential candidate for photoelectric applications.
