Abstract

The New Phytologist Tansley Medal is awarded annually by the New Phytologist Trust to scientists in the early stages of their career who have made an outstanding contribution to plant science. It is our pleasure to announce that the 2015 Tansley Medal has been awarded to Dr Alexander M. Jones of the Sainsbury Laboratory, Cambridge, UK. Alexander undertook his PhD studies at the University of California, Berkeley (USA) in the laboratory of Prof. Mary Wildermuth, and he conducted postdoctoral research at the Carnegie Institution for Science, Department of Plant Biology in Stanford (CA, USA) in the Laboratory of Prof. Wolf Frommer. He has recently taken up a new post as Group Leader at the Sainsbury Laboratory, Cambridge and we wish him every success in his new role. Alexander's Tansley insight, ‘A new look at stress: abscisic acid patterns and dynamics at high-resolution’ (Jones, 2016a, pp. 38–44 ), examines the role of abscisic acid (ABA) in stress and showcases the utility of Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) biosensors in elucidating our understanding of ABA biosynthesis in stress responses and in plant growth and development. For more information on Alexander, please see his profile, also in this issue (Jones, 2016b, pp. 23–24). The 2015 Tansley Medal finalists represent an outstanding group of scientists, and we offer our warmest congratulations to them all. We look forward to following their future endeavours. The judging panel for the 2015 Tansley Medal was comprised of the following New Phytologist Editors: Prof. Amy Austin, Prof. Liam Dolan, Prof. Alistair Hetherington, Prof. Elena Kramer, and Prof. Natalia Requena.
