Abstract

Family structures are becoming increasingly diverse, including single-parent families, grandfamilies, multiracial families, foster care/adoptive families, blended families, and families headed by LGBTQ parents. Research indicates that although the family structure(s) in which a child grows up plays an important role in positive identity formation, the strength of the relationships within the family may be even more important. This Clinical Perspectives aims to introduce examples of diverse family structures, address strengths and challenges within these families, and explore the child and adolescent psychiatrist’s role in developing strong family relationships to build resilience and resist stigma.
