Abstract
AbstractThis chapter describes the value system in the third millennium in a global perspective, and whether Indians would continue to retain their distinctive character in an age in which modern methods of communication and media would knit the world even closer. There is a growth of three powerful lights, which if properly nurtured, could constitute the coming century an era of peace and harmony in the world. These three lights are those of democracy, ecology, and culture. As forces of democracy, ecology and culture in different parts of the world interact and support each other, many effects of value and substance would result and would enrich the world community. It then addresses the role that India might play in the world of tomorrow where cultural attainments and civilizational progress serve as determining factors. Gautama Buddha and Mahatma Gandhi stand out as world figures in the long history of Indian culture.
