Abstract

Abstract The explosive development of new technologies, eg in electronics, optics and computer industries. Has rapidly increased the demand for many so called minor metals. A number of these are now of considerable strategic importance to the industrialized countries and are playing an increasingly important role in world trade. In a series of articles RMR will look at various aspects of these «new metals«. In this issue Ulf Bergqvist introduces the research methodology developed in a major study focusing on the toxicology of the new metals. He then develops his method by analyzing gallium, an important metal in the semiconductor industry. In the coming issues of RMR we will look at other aspects of the gallium industry: geology, corporate structure, market and industrial uses.
