Abstract

El Lissitzky (1889–1941) opens the visual theme of «the new» in avant-garde. His figurine «The new man» (1920–1921) is a project of a mechanical doll, a character of the futuristic opera «A Victory Over the Sun». The author is creating an image, a construction made of two creatures, which corresponds to a profound symbolic scenario. «A new man» is an image which will have a further development in Lissitzky’s creative work of the Soviet period. There are numerous research works devoted to but two of them are significant. Yve-Alain Bois named Prouns Space using the term «Radical reversibility». Reversibility is a possibility to change the meaning depending on the variability of Form perception. John Bowlt named the method of Lissitzky as «manipulating metaphors». The author shows the dependance of proun forms and close to them works of Lissitzky from industrial design of the 1910s, and also pointed at Lissitzky’s subsequent attention to technical drawing and constructive industrial ones. Reversibility and manipulation are the working methods of Lissitzky of the early 1920s. The author of this article will try to consider the figurine «A new man» from these points of view.
