Abstract

Currently in trauma and orthopaedics (T&o) there are more surgeons with Certificates of Completion ofTraining (CCTs) than there are available consultant appointments. One key factor in career progression to a consultant post is experience gained on fellowship. There are varying attitudes among programme directors towards the timing of fellowships (pre/peri/post-CCT) owing to debate about achievement of competencies prior to fellowship and also the possible need to prolong training to achieve further subspecialty experience.
