Abstract
RED CROSS home nursing-recognized for more than 40 years as valuable instruction for preparing people to help care for the sick at home -has taken on a new look and a new name. Now called Care of the Sick and Injured, the newly revised course is designed to teach people not only how to give simple nursing care to those sick at home, but also to help give care to the sick and injured following a disaster or civil emergency. Revised by the American Red Cross in cooperation with the Federal Civil Defense Administration and the U.S. Public Health Service, the course is an outgrowth of the supplementary material included in home nursing programs when the Red Cross was assigned the task in 1950 of training persons in home nursing as a part of the nation's civil defense preparation. The new content on care of injuries and mass care is based on those activities which consultants of the three agencies agreed nursing assistants should be able to perform in emergency situations. To aid in presentation of the course, the Red Cross has published a new instructor's guide as well as a supplement to its home nursing textbook, titled Emergency Care of the Sick and Injured.
