Abstract

A new generation of scholars is dramatically altering our understanding of China's ethnically mixed border regions, producing a remarkable reconceptualization of China's twentieth-century history. Four recent examples focus on disparate periods and places, but all four books critique elements of the Chinese government's position that China's modern borders reflect deep historical roots.
