Expansion of knowledge in molecular or biochemical genetics in recent years has been virtually explosive. Unless one is working in an area immediately related to the new science, it is difficult to maintain a broad and up-to-date perspective of new developments. Two recent books, New Genetics by Leonard Engel and Evolution and Human Behavior by Alexander Alland, are brief, easily read reviews of present-day genetics. Both are written for the lay or professional person who desires a succinct and not too difficult elucidation of the modern science of heredity. They differ, however, in their orientation. Leonard Engel's monograph focuses on the very essence of life, the nature of the gene and chemistry of deoxyribonucleic and ribonucleic acids and transmission of genetic information at the cellular level.
