Abstract

The New Economics Foundation (NEF) is a left-of-centre environmentalist think tank that receives most of its funding from charitable trusts. Having advocated against financial deregulation since its founding days, NEF found itself in a privileged position to expand the reach of their ideas after the financial crisis. However, NEF was also beset by internal tensions—especially between Keynesian pro-growth policy proposals and their focus on environmentalism—in an adverse political environment that prioritised public deficit reductions through cuts to social spending. In that context, and in order to challenge the public understanding of economics, NEF began to argue for a reframing of how we understand the economy.
