Abstract

This article is based on empirical research carried out in Scotland in 2000 and 2001. It centres on the New Deal for Musicians (NDfM), a UK government initiative aimed at improving employability amongst young, unemployed musicians. The article locates the development of the scheme within the broader context of increasing links between the UK government and the country's music industry. It examines the experiences of those taking part in the NDfM in Scotland and suggests that these experiences have relevance beyond the relatively narrow confines of UK labour market policy.
