Abstract

Recently, a probation officer encountered a situation that had the potential of becoming a crisis. An offender with a history of drug abuse and violence had reportedly begun stealing household items from his mother's residence to support a crack cocaine habit. Having tested positive for cocaine on multiple occasions, this offender was faltering in the court ordered drug aftercare program. The time had come for deliberate and expeditious action. Fortunately, the offender was under the new sentencing element of supervised release and the probation officer was able to approach the court with a petition for a warrant in a matter of minutes.
