Abstract

The new British Standard No. 308 is a comprehensive work which should go far to bring unity to drawing procedure. The standard has been long in preparation and at various stages in its compilation has been presented to British industry for comments. It has been discussed internationally, and particularly in American and Canadian committees, which have been giving considerable study to the same subject; the object has been that of reaching a common international understanding of the fundamental principles involved. In preparing the standard, reference has been made to the ‘Dimensional Analysis of Engineering Designs’, an important contribution to the subject published by H.M. Stationery Office in 1948. Recommendations of the standard fall into two main groups: those which relate to general practice, and those which deal with dimensioning and tolerancing.
