Abstract

The NIA-funded Network for Emotional Well-being and Brain Aging (NEW Brain Aging) has the goal of developing a nationwide community of investigators dedicated to research that identifies and tests mechanisms by which brain aging influences EWB and how EWB may impact risk for and progression of Alzheimer's Disease and related dementias (ADRD). Early evidence indicates an association between emotional well-being (EWB) and cognitive functioning, both normal and abnormal. However, study of these associations is underdeveloped. Their fuller understanding from biological, psychological, and social perspectives may facilitate the development of interventions to optimize emotional well-being in later life in people living with dementia (PLWD) and reduce the risk of further cognitive decline. This session includes four presentations by NEW Brain Aging affiliated scholars. In the first, Yeates Conwell describes the NEW Brain Aging program, its rationale and objectives, and the resources it offers to investigators nationwide who are interested in participating in the study of EWB and brain aging. The second is a presentation by Vankee Lin of novel approaches using brain modulation treatments to mitigate cognitive decline and promote healthy aging and EWB. In the third, Kimberly Van Orden reports recent findings from a randomized clinical trial of a volunteering intervention designed to reduce loneliness, with a particular focus on the role played by cognitive impairment as a barrier to social engagement. Fourth, Quincy Samus provides an overview of the conceptual model and approach of the federally funded Making Engagement Meaningful through Organized Routine Interaction (MEMORI) Corps trial – a 12-week virtual, companion-guided activity programming intervention for persons living with dementia at home. Primary outcomes of the study include quality of life, social connectedness (social support, reduced loneliness) for both PWD and volunteer companion guides. Open discussion will follow.
