Abstract

ABSTRACTThis is a review of Sandford Drob’s book Archetype of the Absolute: The Unity of Opposites in Mysticism, Philosophy, and Psychology, which is distinguished as the only comprehensive work on the coincidentia oppositorum that is at the heart of Jungian psychology. This book is not written merely as a discursive survey of the philosophical and psychological approaches to this subject matter but rather in a manner that evokes the conflict of the opposites and compels the reader to wrestle with the implications of the possibility that they may unite in the transcendent. Drob keeps the tension of the opposites alive as he unravels this conundrum that forms a confluence through Jung’s opus.
