Abstract

The motion of the neutral axis in symmetrical pure bending of beams in plasticity is discussed. Both perfectly plastic beams and beams with linear strain hardening are considered. A method is given by means of which it is possible to correlate in a simple manner the motion of the neutral axis with the motion of the elastic-plastic boundaries. Formulas are found for the motion of the neutral axis with increasing curvature. Conditions are established for reversal of direction of motion of neutral axis.
