Abstract

Chronic exposure of rats to 5-nonanone, a symmetrical monoketone, has been shown to produce a clinical neuropathy characterized by giant axonal swellings filled with neurofilaments. Morphologically this neuropathy is similar to that produced by hexane, methyl- n-butyl ketone (MBK), 2,5-hexanedione (2,5-HD) and other γ-diketones. The toxicity of 5-nonanone is enhanced by simultaneous exposure to the microsomal enzyme inducing agent methyl ethyl ketone (MEK).
