Abstract
The nervi nervorum constitute the intrinsic innervation of nerve sheaths. Recent studies have revealed nociceptors with multiple receptive fields that branch within the nerve sheaths and to other deep tissues. Their sensitivities and anatomic location combined with scientific and clinical evidence implicate nervi nervorum in neuropathic and other chronic pain. It is proposed that, besides signaling pain from direct stimulation, nervi nervorum play a role in initiating events leading to these syndromes. Stimulation of nervi nervorum may also maintain central nervous system changes thought to occur in chronic pain states.
