Abstract

Abstract The classical form of the Nernst-Einstein relation is discussed. It is shown that it leads to an obviously non-general relation between the tracer diffusion coefficient and the chemical diffusion coefficient. The Onsager phenomenological equations are used to deduce an exact form of the Nernst-Einstein relation which is in agreement with that given without proof by Kubo. Other exact relations among the mobility, tracer diffusion coefficient and chemical diffusion coefficient are deduced. The origin and meaning of the Haven ratio is discussed in the light of results from recent lattice-gas calculations.
