Abstract

Abstract This brief chapter narrates Purdy’s short college career at Bowling Green State University—three years plus four summer terms. Purdy decided to attend school in the hometown of his paternal line. Instead of a dorm or a fraternity house, he lived with his father, aunt, and for a time, his grandmother in the college town of Bowling Green, Ohio. At first, he struggled as a student but he always did well in literature courses. He bonded with particular professors much more than with his peers. He earned an AB in English with a minor in history, and a BS in education with a major in English and a minor in French. He ended up gathering material from neighbors, two of them professors of his, and other townspeople that he would later use for his novel, The Nephew.
