Abstract

Workplace violence against health care workers (HCWs) in hospitals, particularly those who work in emergency departments (EDs), is a serious and complex occupational hazard. Although many interventions have been suggested to address the problems of workplace violence, no study has investigated the need for improvement in the management of workplace violence from the perspective of HCWs in EDs, or developed feasible solutions to address the specific situation in Taiwan. This study investigates the need for workplace improvement and provides potential solutions to minimize the risk of violence against HCWs in Taiwanese EDs. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Taiwanese EDs from April 2012 to July 2012. Focus group discussions and in-depth interviews were used for data collection. Thematic analysis was used for the data analysis. Concerns about workplace violence from patients and their family members can probably be attributed to problems in the design of the physical environment in EDs and dissatisfaction with current workplace violence interventions. Necessary improvements in workplace violence management in Taiwanese EDs include establishing clear policies and procedures for hospitals and HCWs, enhancing HCWs' knowledge and skills in risk assessment and self-defense through regular education and training programs, providing necessary and prompt assistance for HCWs, and strengthening security features in workplaces. Potential solutions are suggested in terms of establishing relevant policies, creating supportive environments, developing personal skills, strengthening community action, and reorienting health services. This study investigated the need for improvement in the management of workplace violence in Taiwanese EDs. It provides suggestions for integrated and comprehensive approaches to assist hospital managers, policy makers, and occupational health and safety practitioners in developing further effective programs to minimize the risk of workplace violence.
