Abstract

WHAT KIND of students elect Home Economics as their major field of study ? How well endowed are they to achieve successfully in their work at the Uni versity? How strong is their interest in Home Eco nomics? How well do they attain their goal of grad uation? In an attempt to answer these questions a study was undertakenat U. C. L. A. in 1953, whose definitive outlines will be drawn from standardized tests. The tests used in the study were selected by the faculty of the Department of Home Economics. They included the American Council on Education Psycho logical Examination for Freshmen(A. C. E.), the Strong Vocational Interest Test for Women, the Co operative English Testand the Guilford-Zimmerman Temperament Survey. The tests were administered by the Student Counseling Service at the beginning of each semester. The students were requested to take the tests as soon after admittance to the University as possible. Only the first two tests will be consid ered in the present analyses. The data represents a stratified random sample drawn from 477 women students in Home Economics who had taken the battery o f tests over a four year period between February, 1953, and February, 1957. The random sample was chosen by selecting every third student in each class from freshmen to graduate.
