Abstract
IS THERE no unconditional theological necessity for the quest-old or new -of the historical Jesus?' There is as much necessity for it as there was for the inclusion of the Synoptic Gospels in the New Testament canon. The point here is not to appeal to the formal authority of the canon but to suggest that the same realities o.f the Christian faith which led the church to include the Synoptics in the canon also necessitate the quest of the historical Jesus.
