Abstract

The magnetic properties of oriented powder samples of (Y 1− x Nd x ) 2Co 14B compounds are reported. The M( H) curves were measured by a pulsed field method as a function of temperature and Nd concentration. The measured saturation magnetic moments change lineary with x; the anisotropy energy E A changes in sign and is not linear in x. The Nd single ion contribution to anisotropy (SIA) is calculated for q Nd = q Y = +3 e, q Co = +0.39 e and q B = -0.9 e. It is shown that the experimentally observed E A(Nd) consists of the SIA contribution and of the contribution produced by the anisotropic exchange interaction (AEI).
