Abstract

The survivor of two world wars and political systems ranging from the Kaiserreich to the Third Reich, the Deutsches Theater Berlin recently occasioned one of East Berlin's most publicized cultural anniversaries. Following a two-year restoration period, the theatre reopened for the 1983-84 season one hundred years to the day since its founding under Wilhelm I. Understandably, perhaps, the East German State has seen fit to cultivate the rich tradition of the Deutsches Theater as its own.
