Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to provide a broad context for understanding the nature of the therapeutic relationship and the assessment and consequences of its discourse in routine medical visits. We review the major coding schemes and perspectives used to study patient-physician interaction and highlight the complementarity of the qualitative and quantitative approaches to this type of analysis. Finally we suggest future directions for research in this area. (excerpt)
