Abstract

Recent experimental measurements by L. Ye and G. Cody on the elastic modes of a quasi-2D structure, consisting of a 1-in. steel plate with periodically placed lucite blocks, have yielded the surprising observation of localized elastic modes. In order to see the nature of these localized modes, the eigenmodes of the structure are calculated by using the finite element analysis. The results demonstrate that there is a remarkable quasi gap in the bending wave to the lucite shear modes. For the perfect periodic structure, the mode in the gap have extremely low density of states. As a result, small random perturbation causes these elastic modes to be localized.
