Abstract

Intelligent systems (IS) are an essential part of intelligent building (IB). The main objective of the research was to explain the nature of IS in buildings to distinguish an IB from a non-IB. To achieve the defined aim of this paper, an extensive literature review in the area of intelligent buildings and systems was undertaken. The findings from the study identified the complexities of IS, types of IS, the level of integration between IS, the communication between different IS components, and the controller of IS, which all provide the basis for explaining the research objective. It was concluded that the nature of IS depends on lifestyle of the current users. This study contributes to the understanding of the different types and nature of IS in buildings when these buildings are intelligent in ways that differ from non-IBs.
