Abstract
In this paper we shall describe the development of the strike in Britain, paying special attention to its importance within the framework of collective bargaining and trade union growth. A fuller discussion of all the major aspects of Britain's strike record would of course require more than a single paper.1 Perhaps the most useful and concise definition of a strike is that given by Peter sen?'a temporary stoppage of work by a group of employees in order to express a grievance or to enforce a demand'.2 Such a collective stoppage of work must be undertaken in order to bring pressure to bear on those who depend on the sale or use of the products of that work.3
