Abstract

Dr. Buhlmeyer, distinguished colleagues, ladies and gentlemen: I am singularly honored and delighted to be here in Munich, and to participate in this symposium dedicated to the life and contributions of the late William J. Rashkind. How fitting this festival of learning is conducted in Munich, because Bill Rashkind was a great traveller, one who appreciated art and history, philosophy, and friends. It is particularly appropriate that this symposium is held in 1991, 25 years after the introduction of the balloon atrial septostomy. How this technique forever changed the fortunes, indeed, the tapestry of the patient with complete transposition of the great arteries.
