Abstract

This paper provides a personal insight into the National Year of Reading (NYR) in the UK, which took place from September 1998 ‐ August 1999. The National Year of Reading was aimed at the whole community in the UK, rather than specifically at children. However, there are many lessons to be learnt by anyone working in reader development or literacy or within the children's book field. The paper discusses the background to the National Year of Reading, its organisation, management, successes and disappointments. A taste of the vast range of projects, large and small, which took place during the Year, is offered and some analysis made of successful and sustainable programmes. An outline is given of future plans resulting from the Year of Reading. The author was Director of the National Year of Reading and was formerly Senior Children's Book Editor at Penguin UK.
