Abstract

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (Lifeline), 1–800-273-TALK (8255), is a free and confidential service for those in emotional distress or suicidal crisis. In calling the Lifeline, individuals across the United States who need immediate assistance are connected to the nearest available crisis centre within a national network of more than 160 centres. The Lifeline is funded through the US Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and partners with the National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors (NASMHPD) and with Living Works, Inc., an internationally respected organization specializing in suicide intervention skills training. Established in 2005, the Lifeline has answered over three million calls and currently responds to over one million calls a year.
