Abstract

The international sharing of braille and audio books and magazines among libraries and organizations for the blind is an important factor in expanding the universe of reading available to blind and physically handicapped persons. The sharing of such materials generally takes the form of interlending of books or of the permanent acquisition of books and magazines through purchase or gift and exchange arrangements. This article discusses the pros and cons of the purchase, loan, exchange, and donation of braille and audio books and magazines with particular reference to the experience of the Library of Congress National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped.
