Abstract

Outlines the historical background to the opening in 1990 of the National Library of Sri Lanka. Describes the activities of the Sri Lanka National Library Services Board and discusses its relationship with the new National Library. Outlines the main functions of the National Library, with particular emphasis on its role in promoting book development and general library development in Sri Lanka. Gives details of recently-formulated standards for school and public libraries. Describes library development projects at the provincial and regional ( Pradeshiya Sabha) levels, and the role of the library service in supporting the government's poverty alleviation programme ( Janasaviya).
