Abstract
The Nanning-Kunming Railway runs through the minority nationality areas of Southwest China. Construction started during the Eighth Five-Year Plan (1991-1995) and extended into the Ninth Five-Year Plan (1996-2000). Now it is complete and functioning reasonably well. The railway goes through the Lunan Yi Autonomous County of Yunnan, the Bouyei-Miao Autonomous Prefecture of Southwest Guizhou, the Longlin All Nationalities Autonomous County of Guangxi, and Baise, where minority nationalities live in concentrated communities. Some minority nationalities, including Yi, Miao, Bouyei, and Zhuang, reside in officially designated impoverished counties or townships.
