Abstract
It has been widely assumed, following Richards and Schneider, that solidarity in the matrilineal descent group is dependent on the male authority within it. In the matrilineal society of Namonuito Atoll, however, it is the authority of certain females rather than that of males that underlies descent group solidarity.
