Abstract

The occurence of multiple forms of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) in methylotrophic yeasts is known from the literture. But no systematic work has been done to characterize these enzymes in detail. The aim of this work was to establish a suitable electrophoretic method for visualization of the ADH-patterns of these organisms. It was found that the recovery of the enzyme activity during polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) depends on the composition of the gel buffer. The ADH of five different methylotrophic yeasts from the genera Candida, Pichia and Hansenula were analyzed. Every investigated organism shows rather complex ADH-patterns.
