Abstract
RESIDENT Reagan's two landslide victories and Republicans' first Senate majority in over 25 years suggested to many people that American politics moved to right in 1980s. According to political analysts from a wide range of ideological perspectives, United States experienced a significant conservative shift. For example, liberal columnist Anthony Lewis (1980: A35) stated: What happened in 1980 election reflected a profound and general turn to conservatism in this country. And conservative National Review (1984: 14) concluded that recent presidential elections reflected the plain fact that voters are rejecting liberal extremism. On other hand, some scholars questioned conservative eighties thesis through analyses of presidential elections, congressional elections, public opinion polls, and referendum votes. Navarro (1985), for instance, examined a large amount of public opinion data and found continued support for federal social programs by most Americans during 1980s. He concluded:
