The myth of Jocasta and maternal narcissism

Abstract

This paper utilises the ancient Greek myth of Oedipus, and in particular the character's frequently overlooked mother Jocasta, to highlight some of the issues associated with maternal narcissism. A discussion of Jocasta forms the background to case studies where a mother's narcissism, along with an absent father, was pivotal to coping difficulties, which ultimately compelled the patient to seek therapy. Consideration of the Oedipus-Jocasta interpersonal dynamic can contribute to a greater understanding of these patients.
