Abstract

OLOMON IBN GABIROL (ca. 1020ca. 1052) appeared in the literature of medieval Spain something like a meteor: a bright, rapid, and unexpected phenomenon that strikes, fascinates, and puzzles, but after its luminous trail dies out, is quickly forgotten, or remains a riddle for those who wish to understand it. Solomon Ibn Gabirol is perhaps the most puzzling figure in the intellectual history of medieval Judaism; the scholarship which has tried to deal with him and his influence is just as contradictory and enigmatic as the sources themselves.
