Abstract

Mycotic aneurysms and vascular graft infections represent challenging surgical problems. Although Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella spp., and Streptococcus spp. are most often implicated, the medical literature is replete with case reports of atypical bacteria and fungi. Our recent experiences with two category B bioterrorism agents (Coxiella burnetii and Burkholderia pseudomallei) isolated from intraoperative aortic tissue culture prompted questions regarding the prevalence of such organisms as well as the risks to exposed staff.
