Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the students’ recognitions of mutual evaluation in PE classes. Methods: 3 boys and girls among A elementary school participated in the PE classes were selected as participants. The PE classes were done twice a week for 6 weeks with 5 classes of foot-baseball game and 7 classes of T-ball game. The results of this study are as follows. Results: The recognitions were largely divided into two parts-positive and negative. Some students regarded mutual evaluation as a positive. First, students began to think and know about themselves through mutual observation. Second, students got new information and exchanged their thought consistently with each other in mutual evaluation. Third, students tried to correct their errors and to achieve the instructional objectives through mutual evaluation. Lastly, students said that they could build up sense of trust and closeness for each other through mutual evaluation. Others regarded mutual evaluation as a negative. First, students said that they felt fear from the evaluation because they showed their activities or performances to others. Second, some students thought that some of them were inclined to give high point to their close or same sex friends. Conclusion: When mutual evaluation is done in a well-planned class, the effect will be effective. Teachers should try to prepare and execute an appropriate mutual evaluation for each class, and they should also teach students the purpose and criteria of the evaluation before classes.
