Abstract

The full complement of muscles in the mite, Blankaartia ascoscutellaris , is described. Body form and the internal pressure necessary for leg extension are largely the consequence of tension on 31 muscles that have both attachments to the body wall. The basic plan of musculature is similar in all four legs and each movable leg segment is acted upon by at least one muscle. Details of the muscles of the mouthparts, genital field, and excretory pore are all described and discussed.
