Abstract

This article examines the reproductions of fairy-tale images and stories in the comic-book series Fables. Taking the tales “ Sneewittchen ” and “ Schneeweisschen und Rosenrot ” as examples, it focuses on how Bill Willingham’s comic book reproduces, hybridises, and transforms fairy tales visually and textually. This article highlights how Fables creatively and critically engages with both the visual culture of the American comic book, led by DC and Marvel, and the literary tradition of the European fairy tale, especially the Brothers Grimm’s Kinder- und Hausmärchen, thus “ mashing-up ” these two genres’ inherent reproductive qualities to create new stories and even new fictional worlds1.
