Abstract

The epigenetic effects of histone acetyltransferases (HATs) and deacetylases (HDACs) on gene expression via the modulation of nuclear histone acetylation and chromatin remodelling have been extensively characterised. In this context HDAC8 has been a subject of intensive investigation in many cell and tissue types and, owing to the elucidation of the protein structure, is a prime target for therapeutic intervention in a multitude of pathophysiologies, as reviewed recently in this journal by Chakrabarti et al.
