The mucosa of the small intestine of the horse: a microscopical study of speciments obtained through a small intestinal fistula.

Abstract

SUMMARYThe surgical fistulation of the small intestine of ponies was successfully accomplished using single perspex cannulae. This direct access to the lumen provided a means of studying small intestinal function, and biopsies of the mucosa were readily obtained distal to the cannula located in the mid‐jejunum. Using scanning and transmission electron microscopes the major features of mid and lower small intestinal structure were identified including the villous morphology and the fine structure of the enterocytes. Close similarities were apparent between these features and those described for the human small intestine.RÉSUMÉLa fistulisation chirurgicale de l'intestin grêle chez des poneys fut réalisée avec succès en utilisant des canules de type perspex. Cet accès direct à la lumière de l'intestin donna le moyen d'étudier le fonctionnement du viscère, des biopsies de la muqueuse furent obtenues à l'opposé de la canule placée au milieu du jejunum.En utilisant notamment le microscope électronique, on put identifier les caractères principaux de la structure de l'intestin grêle notamment la morphologie des villosités et la structure fine des enterocytes.Des similitudes étroites rapprochent ces caractères de ceux rencontrés dans l'intestin grêle humain.ZUSAMMENFASSUNGDie chirurgische Fistulierung des Dünndarms bei Ponies konnte erfolgreich mit einer Perspexkanüle durchgeführt werden. Dieser direkte Zugang zum Lumen erlaubte das Studium der Dünndarmfunktion und Schleimhautbiopsien konnten aus distal der Kanüle gelegenen Jejunumteilen gewonnen werden. Mit dem Scanning‐ und Transmissionselektronmikroskop konnten die mittleren und tieferen Dünndarmstrukturen identifizeirt und studiert werden, einschliesslich der Morphologie der Villi und der Feinstrukturder Enterocyten. Die Eigenschaften des Pferdedünndarms erwiesen sich als denjenigen des menschlichen Dünndarms sehr ähnlich.
