The MPA Core Course in Information Technology: What Should Be Taught? Why?

Abstract

Although several articles have surveyed the coverage of information technology in Master of Public Administration (MPA) courses, there has been little substantive discussion of what should be covered in the single course that most MPA programs require. This paper argues that the content of the required course and other information technology courses can vary depending on a number of factors such as the nature of the program, its students, targeted employers, and its resources. This article outlines a core course that places major emphasis on concepts and knowledge that will be faced by generalist administrators. The focus of software applications is on innovative applications, underlying concepts, and advanced techniques. Students should employ primarily self-learning techniques. The nature of information technology dictates that the curriculum of the core course must be revisited and changed often.
