Abstract

Studies of movement mechanisms have been carried out in Urumqi Glacier No. 1 for years Four mechanisms have been identified. They are ice deformation, bed deformation, shear faulting and sliding over the bed. The creep experiment on polycrystalline ice with impurities and the observation in ice tunnels excavated at the glacier base show that a definite store of impurities is able to significantly increase the deformation of bed composed of ice-laden debris at the temperature between - 1℃ and the melting point The subpolar-type glaciers in China, on the basis of these studies, might be distinguished into three modes whose movement mechanisms differ from each other to a degree according to their scale and the location of the OC isotherm.
