Oliver Howe Lowry (1910 –1996) was born in Chicago, the youngest of five children. He enrolled at Northwestern University in chemical engineering, hoping to combine chemistry and engineering to emulate his two oldest brothers. The Most Highly Cited Paper in Publishing History: Protein Determination by Oliver H. Protein Measurement with the Folin Phenol Reagent Lowry received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry in 1932 from Northwestern University and entered the University of Chicago as a graduate student in physiological chemistry.
